The most beautiful thing about Barbies is their body shape and their slim figure, as many girls dream to grow up with an “unreal” body like it. At the same time, this is the most outrageous thing about them!
Meet the “Normal” Barbie, a revolutionary plastic doll that has the proportions of an average 19-years-old American girls of today! Under the title “Average Is Beautiful”, designer Nickolay Lamm, Pittsburgh-based artist, decided to launch this new Barbie because according to him, if fashion dolls were made using standard human body proportions, they will look more like his doll!
Lamm started this project last year designed images of what he called “Normal Barbie” in an attempt to make the doll reflective of real bodies. To do that, Lamm decided to use the proportions of an average 19-year-old woman from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and then molded them to a 3D model of Barbie.
It is not so hard to see the huge difference between the original barbie and the “normal” Barbie, and for some of us, it will be hard to accept this change since our mind set has a clear image of what a Barbie doll should look like. So the drastic change of Lamm’s doll can be obviously seen as the normal Barbie is shorter and has more realistic proportions. Her feet are flat, not permanently built to fit into high heels.
In an attempt to make the normal Barbie dream come true, Lamm has launched a crowdfunding site to produce 5,000 “Lammily” dolls, which will feature average proportions, a light amount of makeup, and joints that bend. He’s attempting to raise $95,000 to produce the dolls, but says it’s worth it. “If there’s even a 10% chance that those dolls affect [body image], let’s make it.”
So what do you think about this “strange looking” normal Barbie doll? Would you buy it to your daughter? If you like to back up Lamm’s project, visit his page at: www.lammily.com
